Research and Professional Experience
Richard J. Butler has held positions at DePaul University and Cornell University prior to coming to BYU in 1982.  He received his BA in Economics from the University of Utah and a MS and PhD from the University of Chicago. His research interests include worker’s compensation and disability, and his work has been published in various journals including Health Economics, Risk Management and Insurance Review, the Journal of Occupational Rehabilitation, and the Journal of Risk and Insurance. He is currently an adjunct professor with the Department of BioInformatics at ASU and affiliated with the Center for Economic Analysis of Risk on Insurance for the Poor at Georgia State University. Dr. Butler is the recipient of several awards for his work including the Young Scholar University Award in 1989, the Karl G. Maeser Research award in 1991, Kulp-Wright Award for best book in Insurance and Risk Management published in 1999, a two-time recipient of the Robert I. Mehr Award, and holds Martha Jane Knowlton Coray Professorship.
